You have to learn how to love.

That’s what I keep telling myself when my thoughts bewilder me in the darkest of nights — partly caused by KPLC doing the thing it loves most — disappointing Kenyans with power outages.

Love, that elusive feeling that we struggle to define, is the only experience in life that is real, true, and lasting

Sure, it disappointed you when the “man you thought was the man of your dreams chose someone else over you — and it left you shattered and broken.

Or when you thought you’d be a millionaire in your twenties only to realize your teachers lied to you when they said the warmer the blanket, the colder the future. Since your high school days, you’ve thrown away the blanket, but the reality is that hard work doesn’t necessarily account for diamonds and money.

But now I am old enough to know that no love is ever wasted. Even if the love is unrequited. Even if the objects of love were imaginary.

And I am old enough to know that the heart heals, and you will be in a better place when you grieve your losses and disappointments and are accepting of change.

We do not have to lose the memory of the pain it caused us. It just allows us to embrace a new creation.
