DOG TALK

What do they mean when they compare men to dogs. Is it the equation to loyalty and the beautiful eyes this dog has or is it the lack of focus when it finds something interesting to chew on. Could it be the protective nature a dog has towards its owner or its need for space without feeling claustrophobic? Why are we warned about men being dogs yet we love them to death? Haven’t you heard of girls who tore their dresses and ripped other girls’ wigs for a dog?

Take an example of our newest family member; we do not have a name for it yet. He looks all innocent and shivery. Mum calls it ‘kulu-kulu-kulu’, like the gobbling sound of a turkey. I call it ‘ks,ks,ks’ like the annoying catcalling one gets when walking on that corner to your house. My small brother loves dogs, so you can imagine when mum came smiling, holding a KES 500 ill-looking mongrel and said, “Eriko…tengenezea mgeni nyumba.” If you are reading this, you will probably feel a disapproving tone from me, because I am not a pet fan.

Probably because getting over a dog encounter ten years ago has taken some time.

So yes, that is how we got an unplanned new member to the family. He hates his kennel; it makes him feel trapped so we decided to let it sleep outside.

This dog is quite different from all the dogs I have encountered in my life. It is a masterful seducer. Did I mention the eyes have it? It looks deeply in you as if it wants to communicate with you. It cuddles itself next to your feet and opens itself wanting a belly-rub, (which my small bro understands, because like I said, he is a sucker for dogs- all kinds)

This dog will make you realize, that no heart is made of stone until it pees on your front door and you forget about the love you had for it. Come to think of it, isn’t that how wo-men react when wounded by the dogs in their life?

I do not know what the future holds for me with this new intruder of peace. Maybe I shall love and accept it for its shortcomings- like it’s limited reasoning and its lack of understanding when you communicate. Maybe I shall step it and hit it with pebbles because it does not realize the mistakes it makes. You probably understand this positive and negative attributes if you are in a relationship- I cannot relate yet……..
