A GIRL WANTS HER CAKE.

The sun is shining brightly now, although there was a slight drizzle and I could smell the steam rise from the hot pitch and rusted roofs.

“ The Sun’s coming out again,” I said.

“ Perfect… we should go get you that salted caramel cake you’ve been talking about,” he said. (We shall call him Mr Fix it)

Java’s Salted Caramel Cake

I was sure he licked his lips as he mentioned caramel cake.

I was touched. I felt at one with him. I liked the salted caramel cake too. It always made me lick my lips too, but Corona had damaged my social life and reduced it to social distancing and emoticons that could only be shared virtually with my friends. We could only talk via Zoom- which hackers were having a field trip with or hangouts for safety geeks. Did I mention I was getting tired of the virtual hugs and useless emoticons?

“Meeehn!!! All I’d do to go to Java right now!!” I shouted

“We can still go you know… if we die, we die.” He said.

“Ha-ha,” I laughed, less perturbed by his call to action. I mean, I was ready to defy the government’s order to stay home and stay safe for a piece of cake, and a human connection that. You know, as human beings, we are just never satisfied with anything. Familiarity breeds contempt and staying at home was slowly taking me to that direction.

I was good at camouflaging anxiety and absorbing pressure but this girl needed a change of scenery, have some Java cake and some sunshine to soak in, not some bad news which has become the order of the day.

Back to salted caramel cake…

“You know I can’t leave the house even if I wanted to, plus I’ll have to put on a mask wherever I go. You know, stay home stay safe measures.” I said, perfectly and painfully dodging the cake story.

“Mmh- okay,” he said grudgingly with finality.

Truth is, I am desperately waiting for the day we can walk in the streets of Nairobi and greet strangers and get back that human connection that has been severely severed.

I am eagerly waiting for Fridays to go to my favourite restaurant and have my lemon ginger tea during bad days.

I cannot wait to say hi and bye to the watch guards and hope to do the same the following day.

I am convinced that my Sunday fellowships will be better than the boring state we were left in before Corona struck.

I cannot wait to give my best friends warm, comforting hugs and hope to stay that way a minute longer.

and I cannot wait to share my Salted caramel cake with any soul that comes my way and needs to vent or listen to me vent.
